Sadly most painters of that time expertises was by making any woman beautiful by painting a model than adding small details of the original persons face only enough to be able to tell who the painting is supposed to be of.
Blemishes were never shown and lady’s all looked so lovely. Great for instagram but makes it hard for us to truly know how people of that time looked.
But trust me you go to any town or city back than and people had scares, pimples, warts, and so forth. They would wear an outfit for days at a time only changing a small detail like bows or lace to give the look of new. Bathing 4 times a month or less was normal lol so you know rashes was common
I find the opposite to be true. Take a look at classical paintings that were done at a time where we had cameras. Late 1800s and early 1900s. The paintings are almost exact replicas of the person.
Well paintings from the time period of when cameras were around it became hard to pass an edited painting of yourself.
Artist from 1700s and before even hand half finished paintings found where it showed the face missing but the body fully done. The face is left white like they covered it because that is the part they were to paint of someone else.
If you do art as a living the face is usually not the last detail you do of a painting. It is usually the background or details of clothing.
There was even a famous story of why king Henry VIII married and divorced his 4th wife.
He sent a painter to paint her portrait but found he painted her beautiful. When the king saw her in person he said she was pretty much ugly and divorced her.
The artist lied of her beauty.
Queen Elizabeth the first had a painting of her made that took out her crooked nose, bucked teeth, and small pox scares, than she had it copied for every picture of her.
So we thought for a long time she was beautiful but truth is she wasn’t she used thick layers of white paste with lead in it making it ruin her skin so she would have to apply more over time.
Painters lied lol
True not all are lies but a lot was edited like those glam photo studios from the 80s and 90s lol
