Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, meaning "Saharan Sharp Toothed Lizard" as it teeth resemble those of Carchardon (the Great white shark), was a species of carcharodontosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now North Africa during the Late Cretaceous. It was a very large dinosaur rivaling or even surpassing the tyrannosaurid Tyrannosaurus rex, it's close relatives Mapusaurus and Giganotosaurus, and the aquatic Spinosaurus, measuring up to 44 feet long and weighing up to 8 tons. Its head alone was over 5 feet long and each shark-like tooth was over 8 inches long. We've actually known about Carcharodontosaurus for quite some time as its remains, along with the first remains of Spinosaurus, were described in the mid-1920s by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer. Sadly, both of these remains as well as many other fossils were destroyed when Berlin was bombed in 1944 during World War II, though we've found new remains in the past 30 years.
