Well- “lucky” is relative- but it certain makes the character less problematic- which would be apt for a comedy movie that isn’t meant to be dark and complex like a Tom Clancy film or a newer James Bond. Of course- it’s probably less “luck” and less to do with Ireland than it is the fact that the quintessential iconic spy genre and camp of the film and the obvious subject of the spoof- James Bond- characterized an image of 1960’s glamour. The bonds after Connery received mixed reviews- and some were almost seen as spoofing themselves as the iconic “Bond” to this day and the iconography of the character in film is linked to the 1960’s.

I suppose it’s just as lucky that Powers wasn’t frozen in the 40’s or 50’s as despite the characters actual roots in the Second World War- as that could be problematic at times too. Even the original bond films leaned in more to the camp and whimsy of intelligence work- a flat out “good guy” without turning too hard a look to the wet work and set ups, the destabilization of countries and some of the morally ambiguous aspects of the work that are viewed more as “ends justifying means.”
