The effects of drug use are quite literally just an altered state of mind and perception. While many drugs act on the body- the perception of the action and often some tangible physiological effects- are simply chemicals being sent to and from the brain. With exception of drugs which cross the blood brain barrier- the results of drug use are primarily achievable with the body alone- it’s just that a substance in the drugs triggers charges in the production, uptake, etc. of existing transmitters, mechanisms, and chemicals in our brain which signals the body or changes interpretation of signals in the body.

Deep prayer and meditation have been reported by some devout practitioners to trigger feelings of a “high” and scans and testing of subjects have shown that these acts of focus of a disciplined mind can actually have measurable effects similar to drugs. Really- even out emotions are a similar altered chemical reaction and the trigger just isn’t a substance necessarily- but a cue. That cue can be a substance- food can alter our mood and obviously can have various physiological effects as well as emotional and neurochemical changes.

So in conclusion and Tl:dr- it is totally possible for a person to experience feelings of a “high” etc. without actually using a substance. The mind and perception are complex things- and to the best of our knowledge the brain is more concerned with what it BELIEVES is real than what actually is. You have no actual way of knowing reality- even external validation is faulty because you don’t know if the person validating reality is real or imagined. Think of schizophrenics who can have involved conversations and hallucinations with those not there. If you happen to share the same delusion as another person- or similar enough- you’d both just say that the delusion was real anyway- and if one person says it isn’t and one says it is... if only one is “real” how do you know which?
