I am of the idea that we should "respect" (for lack of a better word) this kind of things because it represent how society was at the time and if we ignore it is like saying it never happened. I mean, obviously no one should make it an excuse to say racial slurs but the fact of the matter is that it existed and we should learn from it.

It may also be he had a shitty attitude. Calling people “retards” isn’t awesome.
