Kind of.. but also kind of... the point? We could turn the magnifying glass of insecure around and point out the insecurities of other groups and how they flail and forth trying to deal with various aspects of inclusion... but that’s not constructive. Instead- let’s reframe this in the context that a whole lot of people of certain groups feel like they are left out, forgotten, not thought about, not included, often excluded from being “Americans” or even legitimate human beings. So much so that estimates put it at over 26 million people of all colors who have participated in demonstrations for one single movement- with over half a million turning out to a single coordinated event alone.

A movement that despite the politics we can attribute to those at the “top” at its core and to most supporting it about- is simply about getting recognition for the fact a group of Americans have a right to live. That’s without counting those who have not demonstrated, those who have spoken out, made art, or lent some for of support or expressed support in other ways. Covid killed a fraction of 26+ million and we shit down the country- but 26+ million people this time, and countless before for the decades and decades of the modern era that certain groups have been pointing to inequities and injustices and they still remain unresolved and in many cases unaddressed.

So factor all that in- and yes. Maybe certain groups of people need America to be reminded about them, their contributions to society and history, their stories and inventions and experiences. And maybe those people want to feel like a part of America and not “others,” maybe they want to see aspects of themselves reflected and represented in the country that is their home- often has been their ancestors homes for generations going back in some cases to before the USA was even a country? And man- for all the flack people give bings like “their special month..” it’s more sad than anything that we can’t make these groups feel included every day and not NEED a month just so that they can be represented in our culture- asides from those pop culture contributions often “inspired by” these groups and then used to benefit everyone except the ones that started them. Just a thought though.
