The Gonads are the primary producer of testosterone in men. More specifically the Leydig cells in the testes. In women- the ovaries produce estrogen and small amounts of testosterone. Testosterone- asides being responsible for “male” sex characteristics- also effects the physical sexual response and ones ability to gain muscle mass and lose fat- higher test levels generally link to higher lean body mass- one of the reasons men often have less trouble stain relatively slim even when eating poorly- at least until they age to a point their hormone levels begin to fall. Other physiological links to testosterone include deeper voice. Mentally- test is linked to increased sexual desire in men and women,

increased aggression (assertiveness, competitive drive, etc.) and often a general feeling of well being and self confidence. Testosterone is also linked through complex paths to risk taking and is believed to increase the threshold for risky behavior.

Thusly: “grow a pair” indicates a lack of testosterone production- and thusly implies one is not assertive, aggressive, bold, strong, etc. it would actually be counter productive if a male lacked these qualities to grow a vagina- as the vagina itself is not shown to produce testosterone- and as a man without testicles- you wouldn’t likely have ovaries and thus you would only be able to produce testosterone in your adrenal gland in very small quantities- smaller than the amount found in a biological female body if the woman has her ovaries and they are healthy.

Thusly “grow a vagina” is only really applicable in a discussion of toughness if we are specifically referring to trauma to the genitals. Such as if a man were kicked in the balls and was whining- you may (somewhat nonsensically) say: “grow a vagina.” Of course- I am told, and anatomy indicates that being kicked in the vagina still hurts- it is more the fact that the most sensitive parts of a vagina present a smaller target and are covered by the labia majora and surrounding tissue in such a way that it is more difficult to get a “direct hit” to the most vulnerable parts, and the thighs would usually help block or mitigate attempt at direct contact.

So while this is obviously a joke- and one I do find some humor in- the premise of the joke fails even casual scrutiny- and as we see here definitively fails more in depth scrutiny. That isn’t to say the joke is invalid- as perception is an important factor in humor- people laugh at farts- so really it’s whatever makes people laugh that we could call a “good” joke.
