The saddening reality is that for too many real 11 year olds- the last panel is closer to their reality. Wether it’s a child pushed to appear adult by their guardians to maintain an image of maturity beyond their age, a child put into acting or pageants and competitions, or a child somewhere being trafficked as a sex slave. And the truth is- even without those extremes kids are not only physically developing earlier on average- they are often immersed in a hyper sexualized culture and media where the “cool” fashions and dances and such are largely “explicit” to more conservative standards. The thing that hasn’t changed over time much- is kids tend to be in a hurry to grow up- be seen as adults, emulate adults-

It’s certainly convenient to be able to see an uncomfortable part of reality reflected in art, and become outraged someone would show us that- to be able to block that aspect of reality from our lives. Those who that reality is part of their lives however cannot simply just get a piece of art blocked and go back to not dealing with the subject matter. When Natalie Portman read the script to “The professional” as a child she cried. Her parents were not happy with the strong sexualization of a child and a story with a sexual relationship between adult and child (helmed by esteemed pedophile Luc Besson.) And they let her do it, and she did it- for her acting career. Which may never have happened otherwise.

That’s something we hear a lot of in “me too” stories out of Hollywood. Not that the women involved were always forced into something by physical power, threats of violence etc, drugs, or the like. That it was told, or implied, or they were aware- that to not “go along” would be the likely end of a career or the end of any chance they’d have at a “shot at the big time.” And Natalie Portman- like many other CHILDREN in entertainment etc- had to make that choice and had guardians willing to make that choice. Was it worth it to have the life she has? I can’t answer that. She may not be able to. But that’s the world we live in- a world where that choice is one we offer. Where little girls compete in make up and swimsuits and such and obsess over their weight and their bodies for adult judges to decide which little girl is the most attractive CHILD.

R Kelly had sex with underage women. Someone’s child. He still has fans and there are still people who listen to his music. He married an underage girl- 15. Married. People still listen to his songs even if they say they hate the man. Roman Polanski, Lic Besson, the list goes on and on. With all the talk of Epstein- who did everyone think were the people with the money and connections to use his “services”? You don’t think he was flying his private jet to truck stops and trailer parks do you?

And there’s the hypocrisy. Ricky Gervais gets a huge laugh for talking about what a great year for pedophile movies- listing the R Kelly documentary and “Two Popes”- but a film with much buzz that took home awards- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- featuring noted period actors who were convicted or confirmed pedophiles- gets no mention there. How many people enjoyed that movie- the one with the sexualized teen agers like Brad Pitts love interest- being tossed around by older men and shown as sex symbols?

Would everyone be ok with Netflix showing a film about sexualized pre teens if the actresses were all over 18 and just LOOKED underage and played underage? If it’s an 18 year old “little person” who’s under developed, dressed as a child- suddenly is that an ok display? There are many questions here and most of them point back at us.

Bill Cosby gets a pass on his “Legacy” because sure- he’s a rapist- but he’s a funny rapist that meant a lot to so many people. Ok. If Bill Cosby had gone to prison for raping kids instead of adults- would THAT be enough to ruin his legacy or would it still be complicated? If after decades the “smoking gun proof” were found to end any ambiguity in allegations against Micheal Jackson and his relationship with kids- would that change things for people?

What’s particularly crazy- is you have people who would almost certainly, or at least would SAY they would- divorce a spouse, even if many years, if they discovered they were a rapist, or had raped someone. But... our musicians and sports stars are just too “important” for us to cut them out of our lives no?

So it would seem- that when a movie is made asking serious and uncomfortable questions about specializing children and the relationships kids have with sex and society has with sex and children- it is porn and disgusting. But- when an acclaimed singer writes a song that has “special meaning” to us- inspired by their underage lover, or when you can fit the sexualization of a child into an otherwise enjoyable pop corn flick- that’s ok with us. We have to separate the artist from the art or view the piece without that part in it.

As I’ve said before- I have mixed feelings on the subject personally. But- I would be glad of the existence of this film led some, maybe many, of us as a society to question things- to look especially at our own relationships with entertainment and how it often intersects with the abuse and exploitation of children and others.
