I always find it interesting that in American culture, people consider loud eating to be annoying. In a lot of other cultures, including the one my parents immigrated from, it's not considered annoying and people don't really think about it.
I wonder if it has roots in how the Anglo as/British culture defined open-mouth chewing as not being polite, whereas eastern cultures see it as a person enjoying their food.
