Sperm donor is a job?

It can be. Contrary to the image of the seedy down on their luck guy in a trench coat slipping into a dark alley and making a “deposit” to go bet the ponies or whatever- make sperm donors tend to be highly vetted. There are strict rules about how far you can live from the donation site, generally requirements for higher degrees and even income and credit score requirements as well as how frequently one may donate, and all sorts of restrictions and requirements on lifestyle, health, and even in some cases genetics! Sperm donors make a fraction of what ovum donors make as sperm is readily replenished while eggs are finite, and the procedure for collecting sperm is not only much less invasive than eggs, but also much less unpleasant generally.

Because IFV is so expensive- it was historically reserved for the more financial comfortable. Often, those who require donor sperm from someone other than a person known to them, want to ensure that the genetics of the donor are free from major flaws, that the donor doesn’t have substance abuse or gambling or other issues and is healthy, and most of the time they will want someone they find attractive or to have a look they can be happy passing traits of to the child. Debates over correlations between genetic lineage and success are not resolved- generally the two aren’t widely held to be inherently linked- but there can be some nuance there and so “successful” is often also a sought after criteria in donors.

It also ensures that they aren’t simply doing it out of desperation of course.

With that said- some donors of eggs or sperm can make a living off it. While there is all manner of legal entanglement and fuzziness- people can and do seek out private donor arrangements outside of established donation organizations. People who have some genetic link to a notable historical lineage, people who have some sort of title or other hereditary claim, people with certain extraordinary genetics or predispositions or rarities; can all make huge sums of money selling their sperm or eggs to prospective parents who would want a child who has higher chances of certain traits (especially rare ones) or a certain lineage.

If not for the child it can sometimes be about them, their family, or their “dynasty” in linking their family name to a notable one and in so doing, effectively elevating the status of their own family. Imagine how much money a person would pay if they were already having a baby with a strangers genetic material- to have that stranger be a Kennedy in their hay day (or even now for many) for example. Your own family would become intertwined with that legacy- being able to call a president or a minor or major Royal a distant relative.

So it is somewhat rare- but it is possible to make a living donating sperm- even if just for a period of time and not a career- and in many countries the very act of donation sperm is almost like a Job in itself with the time and effort and requirements and interviews and such.
