"Yu-Gi-Oh!" is still going strong. In fact, it's on its seventh series (creatively called "Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens").
But the original started it all. By that, I mean the manga. The first 50-so chapters had very little to do with card games, and were far darker than anything shown in the anime. They had an anime adaption too, but it wasn't widely known in the west.
Despite the memetastic nature of the now infamous 4Kids dub, it is the one that introduces me to the franchise, and I still have fond memories of watching it before school. I also remember Dan Green and Eric Stuart's energetic performances as Yami and Kaiba respectively.
And yes, I even played some of the IRL game back in the day. One of my fave combos was using Convulsion of Nature and Archfiend's Oath. Not especially powerful but still fun.
I've seen almost every piece of media related to Yu-Gi-Oh! and I'm still excited to see what its future holds...
Oh boy, I have stuff I can say about this!
First, I never watched the show as a kid. I always thought it looked stupid. Looking back it is still kind of stupid, but an enjoyable sort of stupid. Maximillian pegasus is one of my favourite characters in media, and i fuckin FLIPPED when i heard that kaiba was voiced by brock from pokemon. It took me so off guard it was hilarious.
As for the game itself, around my 1st year of college I actually got super into the card game. First I played duel links, which was fine and dandy, and then I discovered YGOPRO, a free online service where you can make a deck and play for free. I was so hooked it wasnt even funny. My favourite decks are still fire king, fluffal, and DDD too. I stopped playing a while ago after konami took my new irl deck that costed me a fortune and nerfed it into the ground, but I still have fond memories of it, and can always return to a duel and fuck someone up with a fluffal lol
