The scavenger theory was proposed and promptly kicked to the curb. No way something that big was just a scavenger. And while T. rex were likely covered in feathers when they were young to adolescent-in age, as adults they likely would've had minimal feather coverage (I've always been a fan of the feather mane like a reptilian lion).

An opportunistic hunter is what I think they settled on. It would hunt but would just as happily scavenge or steal somethings else's kill.
