Admittedly, they would prefer to use cancel culture to make people kill themselves - but this is Twitter: where everyone is triggered all of the time, and the facts and logic don't matter.

They've been encouraging the desecration of history and the dead for years now

I agree with you. Its psychological warfare: cyberbullying is a hobby. People cannot have mistakes in their past, only a selective group gets a second chance. Media and tools like Twitter are to be blamed.
Acknowledging that our history is riddled with not the heroes that we would like them to be and cancelling them are two different things.
It's pointless to tryband cancel history. The people are dead and nobody gives a shit, but acknowledging our history and it's lesser digestible parts is a great learning experience and should be encouraged.
In regards to historical figures: never mistook just about any historical figure I was taught about as heroic. Which often includes the minorities that were oppressed. Yes, they suffered - but many of them also committed atrocities (many similar to the crimes we now erase historical figures over) - so where does that leave us?
.
The IRA fought hard against tyranny from what I understand, but also would go on to go to extremes and became terrorists and persecutioners in the eyes of the people they claimed to be fighting for.

People don't want to deal with history anymore because Feelings trump fact - but only the feelings of people who are approved to have them. So they twist it, weaponize it, and erase it.
For cancel culture - I'd say it's more than a hobby. And it's terrifying.
.
I've cited to Alec Holloway before, but good example of a man who was targeted by cancel culture, only for it to become readily apparent that the humanoid accusing him had, in fact, been lying. Sadly this truth came out *after* he killed himself. He has received no justice.
.
Peter Someti made the mistake of thanking the wrong people. As a result he was doxed, swatted (and gaslit), and people started stalking his children's bus routes.
.
Johnny Depp has been fired, slandered, labelled an abuser - and the one who did this to him has received backpats, jobs, made a spokesperson of domestic violence. Even though there is proof she committed fraud, was the actual abuser, blackmail, extortion, and a host of other things
Gina Carano made the mistake of saying she doesn't openly support every single move trans people make. She made the mistake of comparing modern tactics used to turn neighbour on neighbour to what happened at the start of the holocaust. As a result she lost her job and has been labelled a bigot and a racist. People APPLAUD this - and even better still, they JEER at her for accepting work with a "right wing extremist." Because if you get cancelled your one and only job is to lay down and beg for forgiveness, while they beat you until you die.
.
There was another guy (idr his name) who was cancelled by MasterCard. Which doesn't sound like a problem - until you think on the scale of how much power and effect that can have on someone's daily life. If all the credit card companies refuse to allow you to use their service, most people wouldn't be able to function right now. And there is no real recourse to this.
Vic Mignogna was accused of being a rapist and a pedophile. He was fired and blacklisted from the industry. And yet ever accusation against him has been proven to be an outright lie. As in - the people accusing him have been verifiably NOT been in the locations they claimed the assault happened. Or their stories changed dramatically with each retelling. Or it turned out by "sexually assaulted" they meant "was getting along with a female in my presence, and that made me uncomfortable."
.
The accusations caused him to end up on anti-depressants. The people against him were so hostile and fanatical they actually worked on cancelling anyone who so much as breathed a word of support for him as well.
.
And the truly ironic thing is - his accusers and the ones shutting him out were found to be engaging in behaviors as bad as (and often worse) than what he'd been accused of.
And these people ^ are all more or less "celebrities." They all have more access to resources than the average person does.
.
The average person has almost no recourse against this behavior. Because no one is going to stand up tomorrow on behalf of Joe from Oklahoma and say "Hey, this isn't right." They're going to say "take it to court" (unaffordable) or "deal with it."
.
I've seen accounts of people calling CPS on others for the mere fact that they disagree with each other, therefore they must be made to suffer. And what better way than to go after their children.
.
Point is - it's more than a hobby or a game or a shame. It's something that is costing people (and their families) their real and metaphorical lives

Indeed Varnie. It is definitely having those impacts. By hobby, I meant people do it for fun, just to start a pile-up or just pure cynicism .
