I mean, that's not really the question though.
`
And technically Moana wanted to leave her family for adventure to begin with from what I remember - she just finally took the leap and ended up saving her family in the end
`
`
Ariel was willing to question what her family had told her about the surface and the human race. Instead of leaving a creature she had been told was evil and dangerous to die she did her best to save him and formed a connection.
`
Because of what Ariel did humans and merfolk were able to actually form some kind of social connection and interact (this gets screwed up a bit in the sequel, but hey)
`
They're both pretty headstrong characters in their own right that make strides for their people and families
In terms of being queen of the Sea, though:
Ariel lived in the ocean, knows it's innerworkings, was one of its inhabitants, etc better than Moana will ever have a hope of doing. She absolute would have had a stronger claim if she'd inherited her father's role and trident.
`
Moana more has a relationship WITH the ocean, and is decent at sailing on it
`
I'd argue neither of them are queens of the sea
`
`
And once again Kidagakash gets hung out to dry. Freaking Disney
Lol well I think Ariel's actual character gets dumbed down a lot at times. The reality is:
Yes, she did get infatuated with Eric, but meeting Eric didn't actually cause her to leave her family exactly.
`
Ariel was already venturing further and further from her family on a regular basis. She felt alienated from them, and wanted more than anything to explore the parts of the world she wasn't supposed to know.
`
Then she encounters humans. Not just Eric, but many of them. And to her surprise they're not the bloodthirsty barbarians she had been told about. They're creatures similar to her. Not so different from John Smith and/or Pocahontas really.
`
She then saves Eric, yes, but she returns to her family.
`
Iirc it's not until her father violently destroyed so much of what she considered precious and important - until she felt so backed into a corner, and that maybe there WAS another option - that she makes the decision to leave behind everything and try and find Eric again
