50 bucks says that she would've been called a Mary Sue if it was released today.
And she was written as a male character, Ridley Scott then just flipped the gender.
But the success of the movie franchise is in big part due to Sigourney Weaver's absolutely genius portrayal of Ripley. She played Ripley as if it could just as well have been a man.
I am not debating that, Alien is an amazing movie and Ripley is an awesome character, I am just saying that if it would've been released today it would've been called woke and Ripley would get called Mary Sue or just a plot device.
People correlate strength in female characters with masculinity. Ripley is peak masculinity, if there was even a throwaway joke about her being better than any man, it would be exactly the same thing that people nowadays dislike about "strong female characters".
Point being, Lady Bird from Lady Bird is as much an example of a strong female character as Ripley.
What I meant is: if this movie were released today with a similar performance of the female lead, it would still not be criticized much in the movie press. The woke movement consists of a couple of very loudmouthed people who monetize their controversial opinions. I highly doubt most of them even agree with what they say on their youtube channel, as long as youtube pays them.
