Once, my parents bought a little gift for all of the guests on my birthday (no reciprocation expected, and they made it clear that there were enough kids so that no one should feel compelled to buy one). There were two versions, toy car (which I had) and Barbie, one that I really wanted. But my Mom thought it wasn't "good enough" because the shoes were painted on and the dress ugly. I ended up trading one of my gifts for this one. So kid in the post: improvise, adapt, overcome!
