A dull axe is still very much lethal

Both would regularly sharpen them and maintain them with an edge. In battle both would dull and both would still remain lethal. But if you think they wouldn't have preferred a sharp edge all the time your fooling yourself. The only guys that didn't care about the edge were maul users. Even maces generally had edges and they kept those as sharp and straight as they could.
