When I was in high school, the teachers would always let the students think there was a secret pool under the floor of the gym and all of the staff would hang out in there after school hours. We still don't know whether it's true or not

You should go there when they have kids signing up and sneak into the gym and then look for the button.

but what if you were swimming and someone accidentally closed the cover and you got stuck underneath and drowned?

it's not a cover, the floor lowers allowing the water to seep through, very similar to this

It's called a slat cover which is pool cover! And it costs around $10,000 at least. And the cover is designed to stop if pressure is applied.
