Oh man. Yeah. Some people seem to hit the pipe HARD when it comes to selling used things- but especially car things. Some is just greed or opportunism- alot I think is that most people, even those who think otherwise- aren’t very knowledgeable about cars.
I can’t tell you how many times in my life I’ve heard someone assume that some car must be worth very little because if is “old,” and even make statements like their <2 model year old Hyundai or Corolla etc> must be worth much more than a 20-30 year old <highly desirable collectors car> Based on the idea “new” means worth more.
But I mean- I’ve had friends of friends ask me as a “car person” if $10k os fair asking price for their 2004 non running economy car no one wants- because the “chip shortage” must mean the chips in the car are worth money right?
And it’s like- no. If a 60,000 mile 1996 probe with stacks of documents going back to the loan and all original well kept parts or something sells for $10k, that doesn’t mean your 120,000 mile probe is even worth $5k or that your 240,000 mile probe is worth $2500. When you see Isuzu vehicross where maybe 10,000 were ever imported and it’s going for $40k for a 1999, just because your CRV is similar to a vehicross does not make it a $40k car. I suppose people can ask whatever they want for their stuff when they sell it. It’s easy to blame sellers right now- but with used cad prices going so crazy- we have to remember there are people actually paying what some of these people are asking. As long as there are people who buy things for those prices, people will try and sell for those prices. But still- watching from the side lines is funny in a dark way for me.
