Yeah. I don’t even know anymore how people can be so…. Foolish. The driving concepts behind the show and especially the federation are progressive liberalism. While TOS can be “problematic” or seem conservative by modern standards, it was quite liberal for the time, and one of if not the first interracial kisses on American network television occurred on the show- precisely to make a political statement that would be considered quite “woke” for the day. The lack of inter human racial issues and (for the time) equal treatment and consideration of human crew members of multiple ethnicities or races was also itself a decision of “wokeness” to show an “enlightened future” where we were not only post scarcity but post racial politics. Various aliens often stood as stand ins for issues of race and bias in our world, with the message generally being that all types of people can and should coexist and respect each other’s cultures.

We see this even more in TNG- where shifting attitudes in the real world allowed them to go even deeper and play even less coy when making metaphors for real world wrongs and how an enlightened society might deal with those in a “woke” way. TNG often featured elements or stories around the crew learning about each other’s cultures, trying to respect each other’s cultures and ways of life, and at times on when these cultural values came into conflict. At times the message could be again, problematic by modern standards- often the federation characters “noble morals” would be imposed when alien cultures had practices the federation viewed as “barbaric,” but in fairness most of these involved things like murder, slavery, etc. having to adopt proper diplomacy and decorum for contact with alien ambassadors or representatives was a plot that occurred several times throughout the series as well. TNG also went deeper into socioeconomic issues for those outside the “post scarcity” sphere most..
