It can be a sad thought, but we can’t really blame modern society- even if it is full of flaws for sure. Living hundreds or thousands of years ago- or tens of thousands of years ago before evidence of professions existed- you probably wouldn’t know about all the wonders of the world beyond what you could see around you.
Less than 100 years ago, even in the 1950’s only around 2% of the British population had traveled abroad- considering this is after a world war to inflate that statistic- that’s a very small number compared to over 56% today.
Travel for pleasure would be even more un common in a pre “career” society or survival situation where one was free from the trappings and benefits of modern society. So even if one knew about all these amazing places, chances are most people would never get to see one let alone many in their lives.
So take heart in that while yes, many people are trapped working week over week to survive while an amazing world exists outside…
..for many, especially in “developed countries” at least, you still have more chance to go see these things by working your career and saving up than most humans in all of history ever did. While past generations could have only wished or before that only dreamed and before that not even dreamed as they’d likely have no idea such places existed beyond if they were born or migrated through them- you probably have a chance to go on holiday (vacation) or perhaps in retirement etc.
if you’re in a relatively well off state you probably can go to most places you’d want, at least once a year or every few years if not more often. Not so long ago even if you could make the expedition and survive it- it might take years to travel to a single place from another.
So I sympathize and would generally rather be doing something else than be at work on many days when I was stuck on a job- but it could be worse. It could be better too, and we are seeing some shifts in “life balance” so there’s hope.
