Yeah, I spent a few months in uni researching this, and all I had at the end was more questions than I started with. My professor’s sly grin when I came to her to change my paper topic out of frustration made me realize how futile it was.

I think the wikipedia entry is quite informative although it also leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
