My experience of working in a hobby shop in Japan was that this indeed is... the *American* reaction.
My interpretation is that for Americans it's important to *have a figure* of one of your favourite characters/shows, not that it is a high-quality product.
Americans are content with a $15 Funko Pop Iron Man, whereas a South Korean wouldn't want anything less than a $250 Hot Toys Iron Man.
