Correct and not. It depends on the sect of Buddhism. Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, many sects and offshoots and influenced beliefs etc. used similar symbols or “inherited” them from other older beliefs. Both right and left facing versions are used religiously or in other belief systems predating the Nazis and precursor movements. and often have their own meanings or context based on direction . Some Buddhist or other faiths only use a single direction. Some use both, but either orientation is used in Buddhism and other systems predating Nazi co-opting.
Sooo… this is a long and complex topic but I’ll skip a bunch of detail. TECHNICALLY the Nazis used the Hakenkreuz- it can be said to be a TYPE of Swastika. Swastika is a romanticization of the Sanskrit word applied to the general family of symbols that looks kinda like that- some even have curves and form an almost circle with the arms. “Manji” “Wanzi” “Manju” and many other words are used to describe similar symbols. Sort of like how a star is a general shape and a pentagram is a particular 5 pointed star but the US flag (and many others) aren’t rocking the symbol of satanism. That said- this meme is not correct. If you do a quick search you’d probably see 9000 posts of “experts” telling you that the Nazi symbol is the diagonal version and the non nazi versions are non diagonal. This is demonstrably false to anyone. Google “SS long service medal” and you will see that the SS used the non “diagonal” version for insignia and medals. There are other uses in an official capacity..
.. as well by Nazis that are not “diagonal.” As a party and government they adopted the “diagonal” as an official standard to represent the body whole, but there are lots of examples in photos and texts or on surviving artifacts which disproves the “if it’s not diagonal it isn’t a Nazi symbol.” The non diagonal version has also been used in the past and present by various Neo Nazi or Nazi ideologically aligned groups and movements etc.
there are alot of little factoids and information and misconceptions and such about this symbol and it’s use by the Nazis etc- but I won’t go on. To finish up I’ll say this- the “Confederate flag” is a battle flag of a regiment and not the actual flag of the Confederacy- but symbolically while the “Rebel Flag” wasn’t the official symbol of the government it was an official symbol of an agency of that government and represented the ideology of that government. The same is true with the Late SS version of the Hakenkruez.
