I guess? Like… Thomas Midgley, Jr. is credited for inventing “Leaded gas,” Fuel for vehicles used from the early 1920’s through the early 1990’s and responsible for massive health and environmental damage as well as many deaths and injuries and lead poisoning. They knew it wasn’t safe, the inventor got lead poisoning. The developers called it “looney gas” and the workers died from exposure. The companies and powerful interests covered it up and- it wasn’t even necessary. It was known and argued as early as the 20’s that there were many, safer AND better alternatives. The things was- it gets complicated- but in simple words, lead was the most lucrative option for the major players. So like… I think it would have been better if that guy DIDN’T make anything. And like- we didn’t need to make something better. We knew there was better stuff. So people really needed to complain more so they’d make the other stuff. Eventually complaining is what got them to phase leaded fuel out.
The double moral of the story is:
1. No. Sometimes it’s better not to create anything if you can’t create something constructive or for a purpose other than self gratification.
2. Probably don’t listen to Ricky Gervais. He’s a celebrity that gained “cred” by telling other celebrities how poncy and out of touch they are and how they need to stay out of social issues and the lives or ordinary people… and like.. he’s ALSO a celebrity that literally makes his living mostly doing comedy where he spreads his opinions and then goes around using his platform and status to spread his little wisdom nuggets. So IM not saying celebrities can’t have wise things to say- I’m just saying maybe don’t listen to the celebrity that has gone out of their way to tell the world that celebrities aren’t the people to listen to on this stuff…?

First of all: Yeah! Finally some says it out loud: Ricky Gervais is an asshole hipocrit picking the lowest hanging fruit and insulting people for a living hiding behind the freedom of speech and an unnecessary fight against political correctness. Just look at the people cheering for him: mostly alt-right loudmouths and verbal abusers
.
As to Thomas Midgely: he's referred to as the person responsible for most deaths in the entire history. Forget Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Ghengis Khan. Just because of the leaded fuel you ask? No, cause he also kind of invented chlorofluorocarbon and it's industrial use.
Also Gervais' entire premise is just bullshit. He's an unfunny little man who is annoyed for being criticized. Which is kind of ironic for someone claiming to love free speech so much. Just watch any show where he appears on and gets criticized. His face gets an even deeper shade of red and he starts dishing out like a pissed off possum in a trashcan. Sad little fucker.
.
Extras is pretty dope though.
Lol. I’m a bit relieved too that I’m not alone, usually in my experience he’s one of those figures that criticism seems to be met with widespread backlash because of what he represents. He certainly can have his moments of funniness- Extras being a good example.
I could certainly go on about his seeming hypocrisies and contradictions, about how like most “free speech” advocates of the type, he basically just wants a “safe space” to express himself without judgment but would be first to mock those using the word or concept for “progressive” ideology. The many examples and quotes where he, like many people who’s “edginess” is part of their identity has said or implied he’s some sort of “rebel” or that “pushing limits like him” is dangerous but worth it… but then… gets upset when there’s danger or pushback and advocates for taking the danger out of speaking your opinions…? Like many “critical thinkers” he mocks the “sheep” and “dumb” while telling people to form their own opinions…
… and then gets upset if their opinions counter his sensibilities. I could go on. Lol. But yeah- he has some comedy gems and some good quotes and checks many of the right boxes that I can see why he would be popular, especially to a certain adolescent mentality that can’t distinguish between having something important to say and using potentially offensive means as the best or only way to do that; and I’m just “pushing the limits” for sport or because you wanted to offend people but didn’t have to. In short- he’s a great troll because he comes off as intelligent and somewhat dignified but “Everyman-ish.”
In the end he does it for money and has literally said that he mixes together the things he believes and things he doesn’t so you can’t tell which is which and it’s all meant to be performative.

see, that's bullcrap.
