It’s a terrible situation and one that I or others could write entire books of text on and not due it justice- but this is quite an oversimplification.
The UK and US have been involved in the situation and almost 100% have political motivations- but there’s a lot more to it and more fingers in the pie than just those two.
That doesn’t make it ok that any foreign powers are involved or that the people have to suffer for the ambitions of others or the machinations of far off governments using their suffering as part of a political game- but these things are often complex and muddy. Did France have the “right” to get involved in a civil war between the British Crown and some secessionists in the American colonies? It serves the French interests and a general grudge with the Brits to kick sand on them by supporting the American Revolution. Generally speaking this tends to start a chain reaction in global politics- especially modern ones.
When Russia invaded Ukraine you have foreign powers sending money, materiel, troops, and other support to Ukraine- should they all “butt out?” Of course there are foreign governments sending aid to help the Russians. Is this all “good will”? No. There are politics at play. While not always true, “the enemy of my enemy is a friend” is a saying that loosely can sum up some of it. Any country that wants to weaken Russia or its allies, or to prevent Russian material or ideological objectives has an opportunity to “fight” Russia without a direct conflict. Likewise hose who would benefit from a weaker Ukraine or a stronger Russian position or a spread of certain ideologies has a chance to support those things. Right or wrong it’s how it works. If foreign countries go into Ukraine to help Russia out and foreign countries don’t go in to try and counter that- an unbalance can occur because a fight is like 2.5 on 1 vs. 1 on 1. So once the meddling starts, it is often a poor choice to sit back
Just as many are happy Ukraine is receiving foreign aid, just like early and current Americans can largely be happy that foreign powers helped us in our wars- often those being “used” to fight proxy wars wouldn’t stop the “using” if they could. Why? Think about it. If you were thrown in a cage match unarmed against a bear- if someone in the audience threw you a bear hunting gun- would you be like “no! What about the bear? What about the people who might get hit in the stands by the bullet? And I don’t want this because you bet money on me and are only giving me this so I’ll win and you get paid!” So what- you’re going to throw yourself at the mercy of the bear because your principles won’t let you take help from someone who is only or mainly helping you for their own benefit? Probably not.
