to be honest, I kinda get where she’s coming from; she wanted him to retire and he wanted to retire so he could spend more time with his family, because he’s on the road pretty much all the time, and because they wanted him to actually be able to enjoy his later years instead of being racked with long-term injuries from the sport, only to have him reverse his decision not long after he announced his retirement. If I were her, I’d be pretty pissed too.
Yeah. Without her money- he alone has made enough just in the NFL (not counting investments etc.) that at least 10 generations could live off what he has without ever working and still live a $100k a year lifestyle. So he doesn’t need to work, and retiring the NFL doesn’t mean he can’t start a business or do commentary or speaking or consulting or any number of things to make money or keep busy but have more time and not be in such physically dangerous work.
So I can also see it being about priorities. If a guy works a dangerous job that keeps him from home but that’s his only way to keep the house together and his only real option- knowing he’d rather be home but is doing it for the family softens the burden some. Here is Rich Tom with a wife who isn’t exactly poor either- and he’s making a choice to be away from his family and be in danger- and he isn’t exactly defending his country or curing cancer or advancing human habitation of the cosmos.
So at the point your spouse has basically said that their love of work or their dedication to their work beats their love or dedication of family and the two are in extreme conflict… I get he is a footballer and he was when she met him- so I guess it comes down to things we don’t know- though we can infer. If he had said from day one and maintained throughout that he loved his job and didn’t plan to ever leave unless he was forced, she’d be unreasonable. She would know what she signed up for. But if he told her that he was would retire “as soon as” or he didn’t “plan to do this forever” or what not- she was misled and based her decisions off untruthful things he said.
