Indeed. The slightly longer version is that like many European nations France had colonies all over the world. As that age of colonization ended it was common that these former colonies became independent nations.
French Guiana (located in South America next to Brazil and Suriname) is not a “country” but is a territory if France. Basically, it stopped being a colony and became part of France- any city in French Guiana is as much part of France as Paris. The leader of French Guiana is the president of France. FG sends representatives to the French government the same as any other territory. The official language is French, the currency is the Euro, every citizen is a French and EU citizen and as part of France it is part of the EU as well. As such FG has Frances largest border with another country as it is part of France, and it is one of the only and one of the largest EU territories outside of Europe.
It is called “French Guiana” in many languages because a chain of 5 regions it was part of were known as the “Guianas” during the period of mass European colonialism in South America. Portuguese Guiana (not bart of Brazil), Spanish Guiana (now part of Venezuela) and some others were absorbed into other countries.
Some became independent countries if their own (Dutch Guiana became Surinam), so French Guiana distinguished the French region and was kept in many languages to avoid confusion with former “Guianas” - Guyana is a country that used to be British Guiana and several regions absorbed into other countries are stilled referred to as “Guyanas” or some variant as regions of their respective countries. There’s more to it- but that’s the short and easy version.
