It’s sort of a two sided appeal. Some people took things far, some way too far during Covid. There were instances where violence was used against those not complying or seemingly not complying with mandates, orders, or practices. Some law enforcements agencies used excessive force- a theme that many of the same people who were “anti mask” and such can be quick to point out when relating to covid but perhaps reluctant to address when the larger issue of excessive force by police is brought up…
But at the same time- the appeal is also for others to forgive those who endangered or potentially endangered the lives of others in selfishness or ignorance. People who sewed discord and acting in ways their neighbors, friends, families, communities, or fellow citizens found obnoxious, dangerous, reckless, etc.
to forgive people who perhaps were in their rights to gamble their own lives against unknowns but went too far in gambling the lives of others. People who spread misinformation-
- both supporting false medical claims that fed feelings of danger as well as false claims spreading dangerous information.
You’re not going to get an agreement suddenly between people who would willingly sacrifice rights for safety or perceived safety, people who felt under the circumstances some restrictions of rights were appropriate, and people who feel that rights should never be comprised in the slightest regardless of safety.
You’ll never get people to agree on wether it is better to be safe and wrong when the proof comes out or steadfast in absence of proof later to be partially or fully vindicated. It’s like guessing the number I’m thinking in my head- you may be right or wrong- but without proof you can justify your guess anyway you want and even gamble your life on that guess- but a guess that turns out right is still a guess.
So it is what it is. Covid killed between 5-8 million people depending on the stats you go by. Maybe less and maybe more- but the most supported numbers show between 5-8 million. That’s a lot of people. More than you’ll probably ever meet or see in one place at once with your own eyes.
Some people weren’t touched by it all, some communities have no one who lost anyone they knew or loved or even perhaps knew someone who knew, and some communities were ravaged. It’s numbers. Fools have trouble with math and most of us are fools.
So all across politics and beliefs people were acting stupid. It is what it is. Wether I believe we should all “forgive and forget” is another matter- but don’t think that only one group of people or one type of behavior is covered when we talk about idiots and covid. You know the best way to spot an idiot? They don’t think they are an idiot.
