I mean sure. Ignoring that being imprisoned as a US citizen in Russia, especially at time Russia is talking about nuclear war because they are so mad at the US for a major set of sanctions as well as supplying weapons to kill invading Russian troops is a bit different than being locked up in a U.S. jail…
And I mean… ignoring that the president is not part of the Legislative or Judicial branches as the chief of the Executive branch- his power to free citizens arrested and prosecuted successfully under the laws and courts of the people are limited to essentially pardoning FEDERAL criminals- so he can’t help state criminals either way…
But like- yeah. He could make it major initiative to try and free convicted criminals and change federal law to legalize marijuana. I mean- the last president had 4 full years and party control and he didn’t do that either- but like… sure. It’s the presidents job to free convicts.
Ha ha. I’m kidding of course. Sarcasm. Because a child who paid attention in class would know that isn’t how the US government works. I mean- despite the perceptions and best efforts of the previous president and many of his followers, the president of the USA is not a monarch or dictator. They don’t actually get to “make the rules,” the “rules” are made by votes and elected representatives voted to office. The president and the federal government at large have constrained powers in interfering with individual states as well as in their ability to just decide a law is “bad” or “stupid” wether it is or not. Like they can’t just say: “well this law is obviously dumb. We aren’t following it anymore.” If you want the minor drug offenders free- get off your ass and vote. Write your representatives. Protest, get petitions, lobby, put pressure on politicians, make social change so other voters support it.
The last president was a clown, but he got a lot of flack for things unfairly too- because at the end of the day, he’s a president. Not everything that happens in the country is on the president nor can the president control everything. The president, along with the federal government, have certain powers and responsibilities in international relations. Like…. When something happen to a U.S. citizen abroad. Because a world where any country in the world can take foreign citizens and punish them by foreign laws and standards is not one where people are very safe to leave home. By the same token- a world where foreign citizens can break laws in other places without consequence isn’t one that’s very great either. There are treaties and conventions but where those don’t apply we rely on various diplomatic means to resolve those situations. To ensure that US citizens are punished to US standards of justice.
