True, but Iran in the seventies was also a dictatorship, just under different management, and rights were violated for different reasons. Iranian government imprisoning people for political reasons, torturing and murdering civilians seeking a better life happened back then to. Even if the women could wear miniskirts.

You forgot to mention how the Shah (installed by the CIA after overthrowing Irans elected leader) stole the countries fortune and sold it to the western Oil companies until people started rioting against him despite all his brutal oppression (powered by the same CIA). They decided to put their literal money on the religious leaders rather than on anyone smelling lightly of leftism. Without the CIA and said oil companies, Ayatollah Chomeini would have died a cringey old geezer sitting on a rug in Paris mumbling prayers.
