Sorry, partial credit. The woman here, who is actually 17 and arguably a girl or young woman- did not grab every butt. She touched two. She was part of a larger group of fans of mixed gender who interrupted the game by taking to the field. She was escorted out by security and put on trial as is the case in most incidents involving fans of any gender behaving as such.
There are few details to the exact charges and proceedings- something that is often common when the news grabs click bait sensationalism- we often see entire news cycles dedicated the the accusations and such but then by the time a trial and/or verdict are delivered the news and public selective outrage have moved on.
It might also be because she was 17, technically a minor, that the proceedings and details aren’t readily available.
That said I can find evidence she was charged with criminal trespass but no evidence of a sexual crime charge. We can’t say with certainty without more evidence there was no charge for a sexual crime, but let’s agree to discuss this as though the charges were not brought up. The fact she is a woman, girl even, may likely have played into the decision of the prosecutors office to not pursue charges for sexual crime- but it’s also very reasonable to consider that the state just didn’t have a case. If they interviewed the athletes who were touched and those athletes were nonchalant about the whole thing, the state can still press charges even if a “victim” of a crime doesn’t want to- but it can really damage the case when there is no supposed victim- that if you put the adult sports players on the stand they’ll shrug and say “meh. Who cares?” Given that a butt pat at…
.. such an event already is somewhat acceptable- teams and coaches do so all the time to each other, and the nature of the crime can be argued to be non sexual which turns it into simple assault… I wouldn’t want to be the attorney that has to argue that a minor girl in a mob of people rushing a sports field deserves jail time for assault because she patted a butt or two- unless those players were deeply and obviously pained and traumatized and sought justice. Is that where we’d want our tax dollars to go? An investigation and trial over butt pats at a rowdy sports event…?
But- would a man get charged with assault..? I am not aware of any cases where a male sports fan ran into a field and received charges for sexual crimes for touching players. I can find no evidence in a cursory search of sexual crimes being charged for on field contact between players/coaches/etc. I couldn’t even find a conviction of a player etc. for the groping or alleged groping of a reporter, fan, or cheer..
.. leader on field in a college or pro game.
If one searched long enough you might be able to. I’ve found accusations of misconduct or unwanted contact, zero charges. Speaking of… accusations and even photographic or video evidence of male players making physical contact without express consent with a female abound and out number the charges for such crimes against players I can find, and by far out number convictions for such conduct.
So I mean…. Maybe her being a female has something to do with it…? But like… also maybe her being 17 has something to do with it…? The same year this occurred Tennis fans were outraged that a male coach touched the butt of a 16yo female player. No charges were filed and the player made statements to the media that she was fine with it- which didn’t really seem to stop people from being upset, but that man didn’t go to jail for sex crimes or become registered as an offender despite touching the butt of a 16yo player on field.
So like… I dunnoh… maybe if your idea of equality is that we should make a 17yo girl an example for the rest of her life for touching two butts because you FEEL like a man would be punished more severely… get help? Like- other than a like minded Reddit support network but more like… spiritual and mental from accredited professionals..? It doesn’t really matter how you feel about this. The two players who were touched would be the people I was concerned about.
Justice isn’t about punishment, it’s about trying to make people whole and disuade bad behavior. The venue and league enacted tougher rules and more security. The girl was removed and was later charged with trespassing.
People shouldn’t touch other people without consent, I’m not here to say the gurl did not wrong and 17 while generally a foolish age is also an age old enough to understand keeping one’s hands to oneself. The overall meme is misleading however as well as seemingly built to fan the flames of an idea of bias with an underlying message that is what? Men shouldn’t be punished for grabbing ass? This girl should have gotten the book thrown at her..?
A college athlete was charged and convicted of rape not so long ago and got a wrist slap because he was young and popular and rich and the judge didn’t want to “ruin a promising life.” So I think if a man can rape a woman, be convicted, and still basically “get away with it,” you can stow your outrage at the thought some poor man might be treated unfairly if he decides to grab some butts. If you’ve got enough money you can rape a butt and walk away- so the inequality there in justice is maybe less extreme between men and woman and more extreme between rich and poor. Hey- remember like a couple years ago when all those wealthy celebrities were fixing college admissions and basically no consequences occurred…? Speaking of college and inequality. Think… do you think a poor family caught gaming the system to get their kids in would get a couple months House arrest at worst..?
So look, if you’re a man who can’t stomach the thiugh of living in a nation where you have to worry about being a sad offender for groping women, or a man who believes that an underage girl need be made a sad offender and get the book thrown at her for touching two butts without asking, just know that if you make enough money you can still be a horrible human being and worry very little about any real criminal consequences for your crimes. Look at all the guys who got the me too treatment in entertainment and such. Some made millions off the apréciales they did about it and others are still plenty rich and plenty free.
R Kelly finally went to jail for crimes he was lured for on national TV decades ago and got 30 years- most of it for racketeering and then the rest primarily for sex trafficking. Not sexual assault, basically smuggling and pimping. He got a guilt verdict for MAKING CHILD PORN and for that was given a sentence of…. ONE YEAR.
So like…. Yeah man. Life isn’t fair but this whole underage girl grabs two butts isn’t the hill I’d advise the men’s rights crowd to make a stand on.
And like… over all I’d say the people with money, regardless of gender, are the ones getting away with thing who if you wanted to invest energy into seeing then get processed by justice…. They’d be the place to start on addressing inequality in justice.
