Well, not entirely a lie. We've gone from working 12-16 hrs/day, 6 days per week, to 8hrs/day, 5 days per week. From 99% to 5% of the population working to make food. But with the lesser need for manual labour in production, the service economy has increased to fill the hours.
I often wonder how the world would look if white collar jobs became as automated as blue collar jobs have become. Perhaps with AI we'll soon find out. The greater question, though, is who will buy the products when no one needs to work?
