I’ve done the etymology several times on this site in depths and at this point it’s a fairly well known bit of internet trivia so let’s skip that and just say that Europe used to call it soccer and then switched it up to footbal because they were mad that Americans had a game called “football” and they didn’t. Or more simply- American “football” was called “football” first and both games are a type of “football-“ a ball game played on foot Vs. horseback. So anyway- what it is called varies and saying one is not correct because a divergent language used a different word would be like a German saying that English speakers word for a vehicle is wrong because we don’t use the German word.
