General Anton Dostler was executed by US authorities on Dec 3, 1945. He had been convicted of ordering the execution of 15 captured Americans under Hitler's Commando Order, and was one of only two Nazi war criminals the US executed by firing squad instead of hanging. This photo was taken as he was tied to the stake, moments before the execution was carried out, and I've always found it particularly haunting.
