Using microscopic hairs on its feet to exploit the Van der Waals forces (the distance-dependent attraction between atoms or molecules) between its feet and the surface, the gecko can cling to any surface but Teflon. There are millions of hairy structures on each foot called setae, each capable of supporting up to 20 mg using Van der Waals forces. Combined, they allow a gecko to hold about 300 lbs.
