The original translation of the hebrew weird used for created in this passage actually is closer to the meaning "light came to be seen", or light became clear. Another way of saying it is before this "day" there was a sun, but out wasnt clearly visible.
But it's not the original translation or text that the Conservative Pre-Millennial Christians are using to state with certainty that the earth is only 6000 years old, therefore everything "we know" about science is wrong. They are using their own, a more recent "modern translation."
The gist of the thought I was trying to convey is that some of the original content and intent of the Bible has been literally lost in translation. This is due to the long story of repetitive re-translation that it has gone through. By my count there are currently 75 different translations in use today, of those 28 are in more "common," regular use.
There are so many in fact, that when citing scripture in print, it is considered to be a "good practice" to also cite the translation version in addition to the usual Book/Chapter Verse(s).
.
This is further compounded by the translation process that many of them went through were often politically motivated. Others were motivated by contemporary (at the time) ideological views. Whole books were added, removed or restored.
For example, the final book is the Revelation according to John, but there were several others like the Apocalypse of Peter, Apocalypse of Esdras, the Apocalypse of Paul, and the Passion of Saint Perpetua.
Another example is the book of Tobit, which is only found in the Catholic bible.
As a last example, there is claimed to exist a mythical or legendary book that was supposed to precede the Book of Genesis that is alleged to have been co-authored by one of the Archangels.
I don't state tamhat earth was made 6000 years ago, and more and more compiled scrolls are being found which about the original texts included in what was used as the original bible. I use a translation that is literally from those scrolls to english, and from those scrolls to spanish. In the wording found in that verse in multiple manuscripts as genesis, verse 3 used the word 'ohr meaning general light. In verse 14 out used ma•' ohr which referred to a source of light. Later in verse 16 the word a•sah is used which means "make or occupy when used to refer to a relationship between two things", instead of ba• rah meaning "create new"
Time does'nt even exist anyway, so the sun makes no difference. Time was made up other portable our lives and explain the passing of day / night (light/dark).
Im an orthodox jew so youd think id be an extreme creationist right? Wrong...there is room for science in religion ...they dont always have to be at odds
