Having been a live in caretaker for my grandmother who suffered from progressing dementia this timeline of paintings is absolutely heart breaking. It is just as difficult on them as it is on their family and loved ones. Those moments of clarity are fleeting but when they randomly occur, the fear, the absolute terror they feel is palatable. They know they are losing their minds and I cannot imagine how horrible it must be to go through this. Growing old terrifies me. At 46 you begin thinking about this stuff. At this point in my life so many family members and friends are no longer with us. I go through photo albums from my teens and early twenties and am gutted with the reality of how many people in those pictures are gone now. It can be a tremendous feeling of loss when you allow yourself to reminisce.
