Everyone was drawing that in my elementary school.
Well, cultural memes can and have spread without the Internet, of course.
Still.. For something to spread across that many cultures, and that long ago.. That seems weird. And it would have had to pass from generation to generation too. I don't recall seeing any parents showing it to their kids, but maybe that's just me.

So where does this "S" thing originally come from?

It was defo around in the late 80's early 90's. I think that its prolifetation all over the world over long amounts of time is another little proof of the collective unconcious mind that exists throughout the universe.
