I used to think the same thing, but it turns out that historical life expectancy was so low because enormous infant and childhood mortality dragged the averages down. People who survived into adulthood have lived into at least their sixties about as far back as we can measure.
Also they didn't have a good medical system or whatever. They used to cut themselves when they got sick or hurt because they believed that the bad blood would leave and they would be better. As time progress, medicine came to place and it became more and more advanced and people started living longer and longer. That's one of the reasons

mmmm... hunt saber tooth tigers? I think not. The walking, stalking part is true, but killing? No, we have no effective claws, that includes nails, as they will chip or break before they tear through flesh, we don't have much agility, and no sharp teeth, being omnivores stops us from this last capability, however, we have our minds, which helped create a rudimentary weapon which helped hunt food, however, our bodies were not used to use these tools, the tools were

Our number one evolutionary trait is our social development and tool making.
Our bodies are terribly designed for hunting anything and even at our most incredibly physically fit state, walking 40 miles a day is a huge stretch.
Roman legions (who's marching capabilities won them an empire for over 1000 years) walked on average 30 miles a day.
