Dogs are all the same species and part of the class mammalia and you'll notice that for the most part, their differences are in the colors of their coats. Sound familiar? Birds covers a much broader range of species, which could be followed back to the classification of aves (class), hence the genetic diversity. The comparison to that of humans is mammalia, of which you'll see greater genetic diversity, such as the great strength of gorillas, the psyduck look of the platypus, and everything else. Science: learn it, live it, love it!
I should mention that although we didn't get cool spikes or acid spitting. We did get the brain, which is just about the greatest thing since sliced bread (needed the brain to make that), and it allowed us to make our own spikes and brew up our own acid to throw on things.
