They've known that since... I think the French Revolution, but possibly not. I know it was in France at any rate. There was a scientist who was curious, so he got permission to test his theory on people who were decapitated by guillotine by calling their names to see how long they would respond post-decapitation.

he got them to blink 3 times if they were still conscious, most did, some didn't, this scientist himself was eventually decapitated, but he only managed 2 blinks. i read this in history class to :)
