Well the answer really depends on how the host pronounced the word. The word 'read' can be read in two ways either the past tense or the present.

Exactly. But if the host pronounced read as red, then steed would be out of the question.

Without hearing the question read out you'd pick 'd' as it contains the word 'read' and can be pronounced either way. ;)

So does lead. Lead as in pencil lead (though that's actually graphite now) or lead as in taking the lead/leading someone somewhere.
