I got pulled in because my shoes had some grey on them and they were supposed to pure black, meanwhile a guy was walking around in none school uniform so i exactly how stupid teachers can be
My high school was the same way- it creates such an environment of shame for girls, I think. Like "Cover yourselves up! What are you doing, tempting boys with your seductive kneecap?"
It also depends on who you are. Like I wore a dress that came mid thigh, with shorts underneath, and 2 1/2 inch straps. They stopped me, saying I needed a jacket because the rules were now 3 inches (I looked in the handbook and that's a lie) and that I needed to put something on to cover my legs. Yet other girls get away with tiny Nike shorts everyday
At my school, girls were banned from putting wrapping bandanas around their heads and tying them up at the top because apparently it meant you were in a gang ._.
In England all schools have a school uniform; my one was black trousers, black shoes, white shirt, black and red tie and a black jumper with the school logo on it. Nothing else was allowed apart from a jacket. :/
mist girls in my school wear short shorts. even the more intorverted bookworm girls. also some of the shorts are short enough to be covered by their shirts
He should have gotten in trouble for his shirt. But at the same time, I can understand why she got in trouble for the shorts. In Indiana at least, schools have to keep mentally disabled people and people who can't pass or don't drop out until they are 21. This puts the school in a complicated position. They are responsible for students between the ages of 13 and 21. If one of those 19, 20, or 21 year olds slept with or did anything sexual with a student under the age of consent, it could be a huge lawsuit for the school and a statutory rape charge for the older student. Strict dress codes are often for legal protection.
I am really glad that this has gotten so much attention and conversation from everyone, and I think you are all making some fantastic points. This is a great article that has a lot of examples from dress codes all around America (that actually sound like some of your schools!!). Like that one time I went to my driver's ed class after school (held at the school) and one of the guys was wearing a shirt that showed a silhouette of a woman's legs open in yellow with a red background, captioned "I'm Lovin' It," and got complimented for it. Same class, the instructor yelled at me for answering too many questions (about 5 total) whereas he praised the aforementioned douchebag for his 10-question streak.
In my school, there was this one freshman who had an image of a naked woman on his shirt, but it wasn't too overly detailed and apparently its "Sports wear". You all have no idea how enraged all my fellow down to earth girls were. Administration did nothing until one of my friends asked a teacher to do something. Its really pathetic that guys can wear shirts that degrate women, and even women that wear shirts that degrate guys (I bet theyre out there). Thing is- people can get away most anything here. Guys sagging and girls with shirts that show their full stomache. Nothing is done. I swear, when its over 60 degrees, tons of girls here wear shorts that you can literally see their butts. The school system really needs to fix this shit, because I'm really tired of all of this.
