My parents have done that too me before.
The year I got my iPod Touch, which is small compared to the box they put it in. They took the iPod and the case and iTunes card they got with it, wrapped them all in layers of newspaper, then put more newspaper on top of that. Then, they took pieces of chopped wood (we have a wood burning stove. We burn wood for heat instead of using the furnace), and placed about 3 or four pieces of top of that. They then closed it and wrapped it up. When they had it under the tree, I'd pick it up and try to figure it out what it was. And for that entire time before Christmas, my parents even told me they got me wood for Christmas. And for a split second I actually believed it when I opened the box and saw the wood on top. Then he told me to take it out and I found the iPod at the bottom.
Once at a birthday part my aunt wraped a gift card in a box about this size but instead of newspapers or wraping paper it was just a bunch of boxes full of smaller boxes. It was epic :)
I did something like that to my best friend, he lives in another state so we has to mail our gifts and FaceTime while we opened it, I wrapped the gifts, then wrapped it in duct tape and wrapped it again. I then put the gifts in two boxes, wrapped them the same way, and then I put the two boxes in a bigger box and shipped it.
