A Halloween staple for over 60 years now, the original song was written by Bobby "Boris" Pickett. The "mash" in question refers to the Mashed Potato, a dance craze popular in the same year as the song's release.
Though a parody song, it became popular quite quickly (it caught on in a flash, if you will) and people still play around the spooky season to this day. In fact, in 2021, it was listed on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart at number 37 (it's still a graveyard smash).
