What I'm curious about is: How did the customer know it was the wrong grade of copper? I can think of about 5 different ways to test the purity (grade) of copper and none of them would have been available in that time period.

Also, influenza ("the flu") is a virus... strep is bacterial (as in Streptococcus). These work in entirely different ways, and the immune system has VERY different ways of dealing with them.
