The Herbstferien (fall holiday) are still called Kartoffelferien by some old folks.
My parents also remember that they'd get some days off to collect Kartoffelkäfer (potato bugs) which were a threat to the potatos.
I think Kartoffelkäfer is one of my favourite words!

One of my favourit birds. Shy but courageous when necessary, nice song and slick moves. Rotkehlchen we call them in germany which means red throaty/red little throat.
