It's actually based on German paganism. The pagans (even after they became Christians) kept celebrating their old holidays, so as a way to get rid of this, the church decided to celebrate the birth and crucifixion of Christ on those holidays in the hope of the pagans forgetting all about them. I guess it worked! The reason we put baubles in Christmas trees is to scare of evil spirits by showing them their own reflection. And the reason we look for eggs during easter, is because the pagans put eggs in the ground to increase the fertility.

The reason why so many Europeans cared and were quite shocked, is because we now realize it can happen anywhere. Paris is very close to home and the idea of being involved in a terrorist attack is scary.

You trade higher taxes for better social services, health care, education etc. And the system as it is in most socialist European countries, makes the rich pay more taxes than the poor. But you are completely right of course! The laws and regulations concering bussinesses are terrible. The goverment should help out small bussiness instead of banks that spend all their money on bonusses. I still feel like capitalism should be regulated, but in a more fair way that prevents foul play. Not based on a set of rules demanded by lobbyists and that only big coporations can profit from.

@the pacifist: But freedom for whom? By low taxes and fewer social services, you grant more freedom for the rich, but not for the poor. By giving everyone equal oporunities, you might create more freedom for those in need of them. And that group is undeniably bigger than the rich.
