Not saying that it wasn't cool of them but at the same time Mexico still had indentured servitude. Basically all they did was change the legal definition of slaves to indentured servants. Now, most people didn't have slaves nor did they have indentured servants in either country. By the time of the American Civil war it's estimated that only 9% of the people owned slaves. I'm not sure what percentage in Mexico but I'd guess it would have had "indentured servants" but I'd bet it'd be similar.
